CAG Precision Medicine and Prognostic Stratification in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (PRECISE-IBD)
Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) are globally rising chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders affecting over 2 million people in Europe. Current treatments target general processes in the inflammatory cascade, but predictive tools for treatment response and disease progression are lacking. Limited understanding of IBD’s diverse manifestations over time makes the prognosis unpredictable and hinders effective personalised intervention.
Precision Medicine and Prognostic Stratification in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (PRECISE-IBD) CAG addresses critical challenges in IBD management due to unclear etiopathogenic factors, unpredictable disease courses, and treatment response variability. The overarching hypothesis is that unravelling these complexities will pave the way for personalised therapy, improving patient prognosis. This collaborative endeavour unites the clinical expertise of three gastroenterology departments in the Capital Region and Region Zealand with the translational research proficiency of the University of Copenhagen and Technical University of Denmark.
Drawing upon two population-based cohorts of newly diagnosed patients and biological therapy naïve patients with IBD, the CAG employs comprehensive biological material sampling at critical junctures, amalgamated with detailed clinical data. This forms the cornerstone for an exhaustive characterization and analysis. Six distinct working packages leverage data from these cohorts for cutting-edge multi-omic profiling and the delineation of IBD subtypes, complemented by rigorous clinical validation.
By combining clinical, genetic, microbiome, immunology, and proteomic data, the CAG aims to define new, data-driven subtypes of IBD. The project holds significance in revolutionising IBD management by leveraging a comprehensive understanding of biological factors influencing disease trajectories.
