Sustainable Health Improvements Following Obesity Treatment
Our long-term vision is to transform the management of obesity and its associated comorbidities, shifting from a chronic condition with limited treatment options to a state where individuals effectively can achieve and maintain improvements of physical and mental health.
We envision a future where sustainable solutions address not only weight loss but also long-term health maintenance and quality of life improvement. This can limit the need for life long pharmacological treatment.
We aim to translate research into concrete actions that can advance healthcare practices, improve obesity management, and ease the burden for individuals living with obesity and society as a whole.
Through educational initiatives, contributions to new clinical guidelines and decision aid tools, we will equip healthcare professionals with the necessary skills to manage obesity.
We will address organ health, inter-organ cross talk and mental health in obesity management and examine strategies for sustained health following weight loss therapies.
The emergence of incretin-based treatment as a new class of weight loss medication heralds a transformative era in obesity therapy. However, critical questions remain unanswered, concerning the duration of pharmacotherapy, the role of behavioral support, personalization of interventions, and avenues for long-term health improvement.
Indeed, burning questions raised by citizens, healthcare providers and authorities include:
- What should happen once the targeted weight loss has been reached?
- Is there a momentum for tapering of drug treatment?
- How can lifestyle interventions be supported best in conjunction with weight loss medicines?
- How can interventions be individualized to match needs and abilities?
- What are the best avenues for long-term health maintenance and quality of life improvement?
